DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Fort Worth, with most jobs running $280-$520 installed depending on flue size and whether the crown needs repair before the cap goes on. Same-day installation is available when we have your diameter in the truck, which covers most DuraFlex 3″-8″ round and oval liners we see in the field. Most owners discover the problem after a storm blows through Tarrant County and they spot the cap sitting in the yard, or when water starts dripping down a flue that was dry last season.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps aren’t one-size-fits-all. The part that fits a DuraFlex 316Ti 5.5″ round liner won’t seat properly on a DuraFlex 304 6″ oval, and mixing series is where most ordering mistakes happen.

Check the collar stamp first. DuraFlex factory caps carry a laser-etched series mark on the stainless collar: “DF316” for 316Ti, “DF304” for standard 304, or “DFSW” for the smooth-wall line. If the stamp’s corroded off, measure the flue collar outside diameter with a tape, not the crown opening. A 6″ liner measures 6″ on the collar, but the crown hole is often cut 7.5″-8″ to allow for clearance. We’ve found caps ordered by crown hole size sitting in garages across Fort Worth’s Mistletoe Heights and Berkeley Place because they rattled loose the first windy day.

We source DuraFlex OEM caps through Haven’s buying network, and we also stock Gelco and Famco equivalents that meet the same 304 or 316 stainless spec when the factory lead time runs long. Corrine Halstead makes the call on which to quote based on what’s in the warehouse that week and whether your liner’s still under DuraFlex’s original warranty. Using a non-OEM cap won’t void the liner warranty, but it does need the same alloy grade to avoid galvanic corrosion at the collar joint.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • The cap is missing or tilted after wind. DuraFlex caps use a draw-band or screw-tight collar depending on the series. Draw-band clamps fatigue after 8-12 years of Texas thermal cycling, especially where Fort Worth’s clay-rich soils shift flues slightly season after season. A tilted cap is one storm from becoming a lawn ornament.
  • Water staining on the firebox ceiling or smoke chamber walls. The cap’s mesh screen or lid seal has failed, or the cap was never the right diameter and gaps opened at the collar. In Fort Worth’s flash-flood spring pattern, an unsealed flue can take in gallons in a single storm. We document this with the camera every time - Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires a photo record on every job.
  • Birds or squirrels in the flue. DuraFlex mesh screens use 5/8″ or 3/4″ weave depending on model. Rust-through at the weld points, common where pine straw and acidic creosote collect, opens gaps large enough for starlings and red squirrels. If you’re hearing scratching in February or March, it’s almost always nesting season.
  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. 304 stainless caps in Fort Worth’s humid summer and occasional ice accumulation will show surface oxidation after 10-15 years; 316Ti holds up better but costs more upfront. The streaks mean the cap’s shedding metal at the lid joint or collar seam, and the structural integrity is declining.
  • Draft problems or smoke spillage on startup. A cap with collapsed mesh, or one clogged with wasp mud from the previous summer, chokes the flue’s draw. DuraFlex caps are designed with specific mesh clearance ratios - a generic replacement from the hardware store often chokes draft even when it fits physically.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
DuraFlex cap replacement, standard 5″-6″ round, draw-band or screw collar $280-$380
DuraFlex cap replacement, 7″-8″ round or oval, including collar adapter $380-$480
Cap plus crown repair (spalling, cracks, or wash slope correction before cap seating) $420-$520
NFPA 211 Level 2 camera inspection with documented photo record Included

What drives the range: flue diameter, series alloy (304 vs 316Ti), whether the existing collar is reusable, and crown condition. We don’t guess at any of it. The written price you get before work starts includes the cap, the installation, the camera inspection, and the photo record. If we pull the old cap and find the flue liner itself has shifted or the crown is worse than visible from the roof, we’ll show you on the camera and write a revised price before touching anything else. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; the cap itself carries the manufacturer’s defect warranty, which we register for you.

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is present, tilted, or has visible mesh damage. Use binoculars. Don’t climb.

The roof pitch on most Fort Worth homes built 1950-1990 - the era where we see the most DuraFlex retrofits - runs 6:12 to 8:12, and the clay tile or composite shingles don’t forgive a misstep. Beyond the fall risk, a DuraFlex cap that’s been in place 10+ years often has corroded fasteners that shear off under torque, leaving you with a spinning drill and a cap that won’t seat or seal. The draw-band tool is specific to the series; the wrong clamp pressure distorts the collar and creates a leak path you won’t find until the next rain. We’ve been called out to River Oaks and Westover Hills to finish jobs that started as DIY and ended with a cap in the bushes and a scratched flue liner. The camera doesn’t lie - and neither does the written estimate. Call (682) 499-2712 and we’ll quote it in writing before we drive.
