Homeowners usually figure out something’s wrong after a storm. Water in the firebox, rust flakes on the hearth, or a cap sitting crooked after wind gusts off the prairie - that’s the typical call. Sometimes it’s squirrels in the flue because the mesh finally gave out. The camera doesn’t lie - and neither does the written estimate.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two main lines we install in Fort Worth: the single-flue “Easy-Install” series with outside-mount legs, and the multi-flue “Top-Mount” models that cover the whole crown. The single-flue caps carry model prefixes like SC for stainless or GC for galvanized; multi-flue units use MC or LC depending on width. Check the stamp on the underside of the lid or the tag on one of the legs - if it’s weathered off, measure the flue tile opening (not the cap itself) and note whether your flue is square, rectangular, or round.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Gelco’s single-flue legs are not interchangeable with Olympia Chimney or Famco hardware, even when the lid size looks close. The leg spacing and tension bracket geometry differ by about 3/8 inch, which is enough to leave gaps or stress-crack the flue tile when tightened. We source Gelco hardware through Haven’s buying network specifically to avoid mix-and-match failures. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but for the leg assemblies and mesh screens we prefer OEM - the 304 stainless spec on genuine Gelco mesh holds up better against Fort Worth’s hail and temperature swings than the 430-grade knockoffs we’ve pulled off roofs after three years.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco’s stainless lids usually outlast the galvanized hardware beneath them. When the leg bolts or base ring start corroding, you get orange runs on brick that owners often mistake for roof flashing problems.
• Mesh sides pulled away from the frame. Squirrels and raccoons test every weak joint. Once the welded seam separates or a leg bolt loosens, animals can force an opening wide enough to nest. We find insulation and acorns in the smoke chamber on about one in five failed-cap calls in Fort Worth.
• Lid sitting tilted or shifted after wind. Gelco caps use set screws or leg tension to stay put. If the crown surface has eroded or the leg brackets fatigued, a 50-mph straight-line wind off the Tarrant County prairie can rotate the cap enough to expose the flue.
• Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap is either missing, incorrectly sized, or the lid-to-mesh seal has failed. On multi-flue models, the cross-break in the lid can crack at the weld and channel water directly onto the crown instead of shedding it.
• Visible gaps between cap legs and flue tile. Thermal expansion in Texas summers loosens hardware over seasons. A gap as narrow as a quarter-inch lets embers escape during a chimney fire and gives sparks a path to the roof.

DIY or Call Us?

Checking whether your Gelco cap is loose or visibly damaged - that’s safe from a ladder if you’re comfortable at height and the roof pitch is walkable. Tightening a set screw with the right driver, maybe. But removing a seized cap from a flue that’s been in place since the Bush administration takes pry bars, torque, and judgment about how much force the flue tile can take. Crack the tile and you’re looking at a liner conversation.
