Class III Glazed Creosote Removal, Near TCU
The homeowner near TCU had been burning seasoned oak for three winters without a sweep. When we ran our camera, the flue liner was coated in Class III glazed creosote, a hard, tar-like deposit that can’t be brushed off with standard tools. We applied a creosote-modifying chemical treatment, returned 48 hours later for rotary chain sweeping, and verified complete removal with a second camera scan. The flue liner showed bare ceramic again, and the documented photo record went into their file under Haven Standard Clause 4. They walked away with a written scope, a written price of $340, and a written warranty.
Smoke Chamber Parging and Soot Removal, Ridglea Hills
A 1962 ranch in Ridglea Hills had a corbelled smoke chamber, the stepped brick area above the firebox that funnels smoke into the flue. The corbelling had never been parged smooth, so smoke eddied in every corner, depositing thick soot and slowing draft. We removed the soot accumulation with rotary tools, then applied HeatShield Cerfractory Foam to fill the gaps and create a smooth, sloped surface. The after photos show a continuous parge coat rated to 2,550°F. Draft improved measurably, and the homeowner’s written warranty covers the parging for ten years.
Chimney Cap Failure and Flue Debris, Arlington Heights
The cap on this Arlington Heights chimney had rusted through at the seams, which is common after Fort Worth’s spring hail seasons send water into every gap. Squirrels had packed the flue with nesting material above the damper, and water streaks had started minor spalling on the interior flue liner. We removed the debris, swept the flue, and installed a Gelco stainless steel cap with a 5/8-inch mesh screen. The new cap carries a lifetime warranty. We also documented the early-stage spalling in the photo record so the homeowner can monitor it during next year’s inspection.
Factory-Built Fireplace Flue Fire Damage, Mira Vista
The Mira Vista homeowner heard a roaring sound in their chimney one February evening and called us the next morning. Our camera inspection found thermal warping and hairline cracks in the factory-built metal flue liner, evidence of a chimney fire that had burned itself out. We cleaned the remaining soot and pyrolyzed deposits, documented every frame of damage for their insurance claim under Haven Standard Clause 4, and provided a written scope for flue replacement. The cleaning and inspection cost $220. The flue replacement was scheduled separately with a written price of $1,840 before any rebuild work began.
Prefabricated Chimney Chase Cover Rust, Fossil Creek
Prefabricated chimneys in Fort Worth’s newer subdivisions like Fossil Creek often come with galvanized chase covers that rust through in five to seven years. This one was pooling water against the flue pipe and sending rust streaks down the siding. We removed the failed cover, swept the flue, and installed a custom cross-break copper chase cover fabricated through Haven’s buying network. The cross-break design sheds water to all four corners instead of pooling in the center. The copper will outlast the siding. Written price before work: $680 for the cover, $180 for the sweep and inspection together.
Firebox Refractory Panel Crack and Soot Accumulation, Fairmount
A 1920s bungalow in Fairmount had a newer prefab fireplace insert that the previous owner installed without proper clearances. The refractory panels, the heat-resistant slabs lining the firebox, had developed a crack from thermal stress, and soot had packed into every corner. We removed the damaged panels, swept the flue and smoke chamber, and installed replacement panels sourced through Olympia Chimney. The after photos show intact refractory surfaces and a clean flue. We also noted in the written report that the surround trim needed three inches of additional clearance to combustibles, which the homeowner addressed before the next burn season.
