Frequently Asked Questions

We arrive in a marked window, text when we're en route, lay protective floor coverings, and inspect the firebox, damper, and exterior masonry before touching a brush. Then we run a rotary sweep system with polypropylene brushes sized to your flue, connected to a HEPA vacuum that captures soot at the source. The camera inspection follows. In Fort Worth's clay-heavy soils, we often see shifted chimney crowns that have opened gaps in the mortar - we photograph everything and review it with you before we pack up. The whole process takes 60-90 minutes for a standard fireplace.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual inspection, with sweeping as needed based on use and fuel type. Fort Worth's mild winters mean many homeowners burn only occasionally, but our clay soil and freeze-thaw cycles stress masonry year-round. Even rarely-used chimneys in Haltom City or Lake Worth should be inspected annually for water intrusion, animal nesting, and deteriorated liners. If you burn seasoned hardwood more than three times weekly during burning season, plan on sweeping every cord of wood or annually, whichever comes first.

Most residential chimney cleanings in Fort Worth take 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to departure. Heavy glazed creosote removal, multi-flue systems common in larger North Richland Hills homes, or bird nest extraction from uncapped flues can extend this to two hours. We schedule real windows, not four-hour blocks, and text when the technician is on the way. If your chimney hasn't been serviced since you bought the home, budget the longer end - we won't rush the camera inspection to hit a clock.

No. Our rotary sweep systems are vacuum-assisted and sealed to the flue opening with a containment collar. We lay drop cloths from the entry door to the hearth and use HEPA filtration that captures particles down to 0.3 microns. In 17 years of service, we've learned that Fort Worth's older homes in neighborhoods like River Oaks often have tighter floor plans where dust travel is a real concern - we treat every living room like it's our own. If soot escapes our containment, we clean it at our expense.

Creosote is the tar-like condensation product of incomplete wood combustion, and it is the leading cause of chimney fires. It accumulates in three stages: flaky soot (sweepable), crunchy flakes (requires harder brushing), and glazed, hardened tar (requires specialized chemical treatment or rotary chains). Fort Worth's humid subtropical climate, with summer moisture infiltrating cooler flues, accelerates Stage 3 creosote formation in chimneys that sit unused for months. Stage 3 creosote cannot be removed with standard brushing and poses the highest fire risk - we test for it during every inspection and tell you exactly what stage we're seeing.

We specify DuraFlex stainless steel liners for most wood-burning rebuilds and Gelco liners where manufacturer compatibility or specific alloy requirements dictate. Both carry appropriate warranties for residential use, and we document the serial number and installation date in your Haven Standard report. The Fort Worth market sees a lot of older unlined masonry chimneys, particularly in pre-1980 homes around White Settlement and Forest Hill, where a proper liner installation is often the difference between safe operation and a condemned system. We do not install generic or uncertified liner products.

Yes, for appropriate candidates. HeatShield is a cerfractory flue resurfacing system we use when clay flue tiles have minor cracking, spalling, or mortar joint gaps but remain structurally sound. It is not a substitute for a full liner in heavily deteriorated systems. We determine candidacy through camera inspection, not guesswork. In Fort Worth's expansive clay soils, we've seen chimneys shift enough to open mortar joints without actually cracking tiles - HeatShield addresses this precisely. We show you the before-and-after footage so you can see what was sealed.

We use Copperfield rotary sweep systems with modular polypropylene brushes in diameters from 5 to 13 inches, paired with high-torque drills and HEPA vacuum extraction. For glazed creosote, we deploy chemical modifiers that break down tar deposits over 12-24 hours before mechanical removal. Our camera systems are purpose-built for flue inspection, not repurposed plumbing equipment, with articulating heads that let us examine mortar joints and flue tile shoulders directly. The tools matter less than the technician operating them, but we don't send anyone into your home with hardware-store brushes and a shop vac.

Every professional working under our name in Fort Worth is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires, and we verify this before they ever enter a home. We do not send untrained laborers or day-rate hires. Our background-check and license-verification protocol is Clause 3 of the Haven Standard - the technician's name and license status are available on request. We carry general liability and workers' compensation coverage appropriate to the trade. We are not a handyman service that "also does chimneys."

Routine chimney sweeping and Level 2 inspection require no permit in Fort Worth or Tarrant County. Structural repairs, liner installations, and chimney rebuilds may trigger permitting depending on scope and jurisdiction - Fort Worth's Development Services Department oversees this, while smaller municipalities like Lake Worth or Saginaw may have their own requirements or defer to county standards. We handle permit research and submission as part of any repair quote that requires it, and we disclose permit costs separately in writing. You won't discover a permit fee after work begins.

Look for CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) certification as a baseline, which indicates training in NFPA 211 standards, fire codes, and proper sweep technique. Beyond that, ask whether the company performs Level 2 camera inspections as standard practice - most do not, and NFPA 211 defines this as the actual inspection level required for real estate transactions, chimney fires, and new appliance installations. The name "Emberly" refers specifically to this standard. Certification without documented inspection evidence is just a wall plaque.

Call the fire department first if flames or smoke are visible, then call us at (682) 499-2712 for a Level 2 inspection before using the fireplace again. Chimney fires often announce themselves with a loud roaring or cracking sound, dense smoke, or a hot smell in walls - but slow-burning fires can go entirely unnoticed, leaving cracked flue tiles and compromised liners that create carbon monoxide pathways. We prioritize post-fire inspections because the damage is rarely visible from the firebox. Do not burn again until a camera inspection confirms flue integrity; the risk of house fire or CO poisoning is real and not worth guessing about.

Absolutely, and you should. Standard home inspectors in Texas visually examine chimneys from the ground and fireplace opening, but they do not run cameras up flues or inspect internal liner condition. In Fort Worth's competitive market, buyers in neighborhoods like Keller and Bedford often waive inspection contingencies under pressure - a standalone Level 2 chimney inspection with documented footage protects you from inheriting a $3,000-$8,000 liner replacement. We provide written reports with photos within 24 hours, formatted for real estate negotiation. Clause 1 applies: you get the price for any needed work in writing before you commit to us or the seller.

Yes, though we partner with licensed wildlife handlers for live animal extraction when required by Texas law. Raccoons, squirrels, and chimney swifts are common in Fort Worth's mature neighborhoods like River Oaks, where tree canopy connects directly to rooflines. We remove nests, debris, and deceased animals, then install proper chimney caps with animal-proof screening to prevent recurrence. The camera inspection follows removal to confirm no flue damage occurred. If you hear scratching or chirping, stop using the fireplace immediately - smoke can kill nesting wildlife and create blockage hazards.

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the week. A live coordinator takes your information and connects you with the local Fort Worth team. For non-urgent scheduling, you'll typically hear back with available windows within a few hours. For suspected chimney fires, carbon monoxide detector alarms, or structural damage after severe weather, we escalate immediately. We do not promise dispatch times we cannot guarantee, but we do promise a human answers when you call.

Every sweep and inspection is documented under the Haven Standard, which includes a written scope, flat price, and photo/video record of findings. Repair work carries manufacturer warranties on materials - DuraFlex and Gelco liners have their own residential coverage terms, which we explain and document at installation. Our commitment is that if we missed something we should have caught, we make it right. The warranty is in writing, not verbal, and it references the specific footage and readings from your job file.

The Haven Standard is a five-clause code that governs every job we perform. Clause 1: Have it in writing - flat price, written scope, written warranty before anyone starts. Clause 2: Arrive on schedule - a real window, a named tech, a text when they are on the way. Clause 3: Verified crews - licensed, insured, background-checked professionals. Clause 4: Evidence on every job - photos and readings of what we actually found. Clause 5: No surprises - no door upsell, no scope creep, no "while we're in here." It was built from Emberly Chimney Cleaners's practice of archiving camera footage years before the industry required it - the documentation that proves a liner failed before a fire, not after.

Tell us specifically what fell short, and we return to address it. Our reputation in Fort Worth, Haltom City, and across Tarrant County depends on homeowners who research before they call and review honestly after we're done. If soot escaped our containment, if the technician was late without notification, if the camera footage was unclear - we fix it. The Haven Standard is not a marketing phrase; it is the operating agreement between our local team and the brand that sets our protocols. Corrine Halstead reviews every complaint personally.

Clear a path from your entry to the fireplace, remove fragile items from the mantel, and avoid burning for 24 hours beforehand so the flue cools completely. We bring our own drop cloths, vacuums, and containment equipment. If you have pets, secure them in another room - the rotary equipment is loud and unfamiliar. For homes in Lake Worth or Watauga with exterior-only access due to sealed fireplaces, ensure we can reach the roof safely; our technicians carry appropriate ladders and fall protection, but we need clear access without low-hanging branches or wet clay tile that creates slip hazards.

You can brush superficial soot from a straight, short flue with proper brushes and a shop vac, but you cannot perform a Level 2 camera inspection yourself, and you cannot safely assess liner condition, mortar joint integrity, or creosote stage without training. Fort Worth's clay soils shift chimneys in ways that create hidden gaps. More critically, glazed creosote removal requires chemical treatment and rotary chains that generate extreme friction heat - improper technique can ignite deposits or damage flue tiles. We document what we find so you can see it; DIY cleaning documents nothing and may leave dangerous conditions undetected. For safety's sake, the inspection matters more than the brushing.
