Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps aren’t one-size-fits-all. The part that fits a DuraFlex 316Ti 5.5″ round liner won’t seat properly on a DuraFlex 304 6″ oval, and mixing series is where most ordering mistakes happen.

Check the collar stamp first. DuraFlex factory caps carry a laser-etched series mark on the stainless collar: “DF316” for 316Ti, “DF304” for standard 304, or “DFSW” for the smooth-wall line. If the stamp’s corroded off, measure the flue collar outside diameter with a tape, not the crown opening. A 6″ liner measures 6″ on the collar, but the crown hole is often cut 7.5″-8″ to allow for clearance. We’ve found caps ordered by crown hole size sitting in garages across Fort Worth’s Mistletoe Heights and Berkeley Place because they rattled loose the first windy day.

• The cap is missing or tilted after wind. DuraFlex caps use a draw-band or screw-tight collar depending on the series. Draw-band clamps fatigue after 8-12 years of Texas thermal cycling, especially where Fort Worth’s clay-rich soils shift flues slightly season after season. A tilted cap is one storm from becoming a lawn ornament.
• Water staining on the firebox ceiling or smoke chamber walls. The cap’s mesh screen or lid seal has failed, or the cap was never the right diameter and gaps opened at the collar. The streaks mean the cap’s shedding metal at the lid joint or collar seam, and the structural integrity is declining.
• Draft problems or smoke spillage on startup. A cap with collapsed mesh, or one clogged with wasp mud from the previous summer, chokes the flue’s draw.
